The Prime Minister of India launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana onFebruary 15, 2024 . This scheme provides a subsidy to install solar panels on the roofs of households, with the goal of helping them save money on electricity bills. The scheme is estimated to benefit 1 crore households across India.
The subsidy will cover up to 40% of the cost of the solar panels. It is estimated that the scheme will save the government Rs. 75,000 crore per year in electricity costs.

Eligibility criteria of subsidy in PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
To be eligible for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a household must meet the following criteria:
1. Be an Indian citizen
2. Own a house with a roof that's suitable for installing solar panels
3. Have a valid electricity connection
4. Not have received any other subsidy for solar panels.

How to apply for National Rooftop Solar Scheme
To apply for the National Rooftop Solar Scheme follow these steps:
Step-1 : Visit the official website.
Step-2 : Provide the following details for registration.
- Select your State
- Select your Electricity Distribution Company
- Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
- Enter Mobile Number
- Enter Email
- Please follow as per the direction from the portal.
Step-3 : Login with Consumer Number & Mobile Number.
Step-4 : Apply for the Rooftop Solar as per the form.
Step-5 : Fill out the online application form.
Step-6 : Wait for the feasibility approval from DISCOM. Once you get the feasibility approval install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM.
Step-7 : Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for net meter.
Step-8 : After installation of net meter and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate commissioning certificate from portal.
Step-9 : Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.

How do I choose a vendor for a solar power system, and what should I look for?
To select a vendor for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, you can:
- Register on the National Portal for Rooftop Solar
- Select your state, district, and electricity distribution company
- Enter your consumer account number and mobile number
- Log in with your mobile number
- Apply for rooftop solar
- Choose a vendor from the list of registered vendors
- Select the make of the rooftop solar unit you want installed
After the plant is installed, you can submit the plant details and apply for a net meter. Once the net meter is installed and inspected, the portal will generate a commissioning certificate. You can then submit your bank account details and a canceled check through the portal to receive your subsidy within 30 days.
